CURRICULUM

Greenwood School District follows the Arkansas standards for all subject areas. As we strive to follow these standards, we utilize the following programs for instruction.

K-4 MATH

Open Up Resources K-5 Math Curriculum

  • The Open Up Resources K-5 Math Curriculum promotes mathematical growth, fosters math discourse, and develops a math community. The instructional materials within this curriculum provide a coherent mathematical story across units and grade levels. The units are designed with research-based learning trajectories and are rooted in content and practice standards to foster learning and achievement for all. Students are provided with a balance of problem-solving, developing conceptual understanding, and opportunities to access deeper mathematical reasoning. Problem-based activities are designed to promote discussion and for students to defend their mathematical reasoning.

Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)

  • Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is a student-centered approach to teaching math. It starts with what your students already know and builds on their natural number sense and intuitive approaches to problem-solving. Rather than a math program or curriculum, CGI is a way of listening to students, asking smart questions, and engaging with their thinking—all with the goal of uncovering and expanding every student’s mathematical understanding.

Extending Children's Mathematics (ECM)

  • Extending Children's Mathematics (ECM) promotes a solid foundation for conceptualizing fractions and decimals in 3rd and 4th grade. It shows how the same kinds of intuitive knowledge and sense-making that provides the basis for children’s learning of whole number arithmetic (CGI) can be extended to fractions and decimals.

Number Talks

  • A Number Talk is a five to fifteen minute classroom conversation around purposefully crafted problems that are solved mentally. During a Number Talk, teachers ask students to mentally solve problems to help students focus on number relationships, encourage and elicit students’ individual strategies, and help students construct important mathematical ideas. As students share and defend their solutions and strategies, they have opportunities to collectively reason about numbers while building their mathematical understanding.

K-2 LITERACY

East Pointe students are engaged in learning with all of the 5 Pillars of Reading including Writing.  Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Fluency.  Teachers use the proven Science of Reading as a basis for planning and delivering instruction.

Instructional Materials

Wilson Fundations Website

  • As a recognized leader in multisensory, structured language programs, Wilson brings more than a decade of systematic and explicit instruction to the K-2 classroom.  It provides research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program.  East Pointe students have fun learning with this state-approved program for phonics.

95% Group Website

  • 95 Percent Group is an educational consulting company focused on reading improvement in pre-K through grade 12. Why the single focus on reading? Reading proficiency is the foundation of student achievement in all curriculum areas and academic pursuits. It’s that simple…and that important.

  • Our teachers use these state-approved Phonological Awareness and Phonics assessments and materials for intervention and small group instruction.

    • Phonological Awareness Chip Kit & Screener

    • Phonics Screener for Intervention

    • Phonics Lesson Library Kits: Basic Skill, Advanced Skill, & Multisyllable Skill

K-4 LITERACY

The R.I.S.E. initiative has three goals and our school supports these goals.  Both principals and teachers are trained in the Science of Reading.

  • Goal 1 - Sharpen the focus and strengthen instruction.

  • Goal 2 - Create community collaboration

  • Goal 3 - Build a culture of reading

Our teachers use this strong research base to build collaborative units to engage and challenge students.
